Now, I have been asked to keep this post to simple bullet points, keep to the facts. But I feel that I would be doing this new camera release from Sony a severe disservice! One can’t describe the excitement I had unboxing this new technological marvel from the Japanese cinema camera manufacturer (someone in the office has pointed out that this sounds like A.I, which I found extremely insulting; I bet Byron would be called A.I now).
But let me keep it brief as I understand we’re all very busy watching a show called ‘The Traitors’ (what a current and non-dating reference). So here are my top FX5 draws! (And their catches):
The LCD Screen
HUGEEEEEEEE – 3.5 inch!!!!! The screen on the FX3 was only 3 inches. But trust me it’s like going from a TV to a Chris Nolan IMAX. It’s bright and contains all the info you need, especially with the Burano and Venice-style menu system.
BUT! The screen does feel not quite as robust as its predecessors with its 4-axis tilt (which we think is to do with air cooling more than ease of use), so we’ll see how it lasts in the long run.
The Detachable EVF
But there are some drawbacks: the image does seem to lag a bit (nothing to affect your shoot, but maybe for you gamers out there, it could prove annoying). And without a third-party cage, you can’t use the EVF and XLR top handle. But we all knew this before it came out, and it's still a very cool feature.
The FULLY Stacked 5K Sensor
You can shoot 3:2, loads of anamorphic desqueezes in camera (great for the Atlas lenses we stock). This will be a great B camera for the Burano and even the Venice!!! It will also be a great run and gun handheld camera, super lightweight but with soooo much packed in. There will be so many kinds of shoots this will be invaluable on; rigged in cars (they were even used by Bradley Pitt in F1: The Movie), on horseback and even in a simple interview set-up where space is tight (like on the International Space Station).
It’s like a GoPro on Ecstasy! No buts!
(P.S . – Have a look at this FX5 test video Gareth Edwards did, Director of Rogue One and The Creator. Doesn’t the camera look gorgeous?!)
